Seiko Epson Environmental Vision 2050

The cornerstone of the Seiko Epson Corporation environmental vision for 2050 is to look at the key components of Environmental Sustainability and by:

i) restricting CO2 emissions to a level below the Earth's absorption capacity, and

ii) adopting our manufacturing processes to only use recycled resources,

Epson has targeted to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% across the lifecycle of all products and services by the year 2050.

Epson is working to preserve the natural environment by providing products that tread lightly on the Earth. For more information view the Seiko Epson Environmental Vision 2050

Epson has set four key conditions in order to work towards achieving "Environmental Vision 2050"

  1. Reduction of CO2 emissions by 90% across the life cycle of all products and services by 2050.
  2. Inclusion of all products in the resource reuse and recycling loop*.
  3. Reduction of direct CO2 emissions by 90%, and elimination of global warming gas emissions other than CO2.
  4. Restoration and preservation of biodiversity as a member of the ecosystem, together with local communities.

"Environmental Vision 2050" defines the state to which we aspire, and not the steps we will take to get there. Further, the ideals of the vision cannot be realized by Epson alone. We believe the path to realization will become clear as we engage our stakeholders, our suppliers, business partners, customers, and people in the communities in which we operate in dialog and action. To enlist their cooperation, we must inform our stakeholders about the ways, both current and planned, in which we do and will exercise care for the environment as we conduct our business activities.

Toward this end, we have summed up our staunch commitment to environmental action in the form of an Environmental Positioning Statement, the message of which we plan to convey through such opportunities as present themselves in the course of our business activities.

Environmental carrying capacity

The amount of human activity and environmentally harmful materials (substances that degrade or pollute the environment) that can be supported without impairing the environment.

"Environmental Vision 2050" carbon dioxide is cited as a representative environmentally harmful material, and the environmental carrying capacity is assumed to be the capacity of the Earth's natural environment to support it.

Biological diversity, i.e. the existence of diverse forms of life in a given ecosystem.

The Convention on Biological Diversity defines this term as "the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.

Resource recycling loop

A system in which the input of new resources is gradually reduced by repeatedly reusing and recycling resources used in earlier products.

A planning technique in which a desired outcome or goal is envisioned and planned before the scenario for achieving the outcome or goal is devised.
